How smart home devices are actually compromised
- 1Credential stuffing — an email and password leaked in an unrelated breach is replayed against your camera account. It works because the password was reused and two-factor was off. This is the single most common cause, by a wide margin.
- 2Lingering shared access — an installer, cleaner, contractor, ex-partner, previous owner or short-term rental guest still holds an account invitation, a keypad code, or the Wi-Fi passphrase.
- 3Flat network pivoting — a cheap plug, bulb or off-brand camera with stale firmware is compromised, and because everything shares one network, the attacker can then scan and reach your computers, NAS and work devices.
- 4Abandoned firmware — a device whose manufacturer stopped shipping updates, or a device that updates only when manually prompted and has not been touched since installation.
- 5Router weakness — default admin credentials, WPS left enabled, remote management exposed to the internet, or a Wi-Fi passphrase that has been given out to a dozen people over five years.
- 6Physical and radio attacks — the rarest category, and the one buyers worry about most: jamming a wireless sensor, or relay-attacking a keyless entry. Real, but a distant sixth.
How to choose smart home security devices
Ignore star ratings and marketing tiers. Judge every device you are considering against five questions:
- Does it support two-factor authentication that is not SMS-only? App-based or passkey 2FA is the baseline in 2026.
- Does the manufacturer publish a security update policy with a stated end-of-support date? No published date means assume support ends the day you buy it.
- Is end-to-end encryption available for video, and is it on by default or at least available without losing core features?
- Can it work at all if the internet or the vendor's cloud goes down? Local recording or a local hub matters during hurricane season, when connectivity cycles for days.
- Does it run on battery, wired power, or both — and what happens after a 12-hour outage?
A well-designed South Florida system usually looks like: a wired or dual-power camera at each entry approach, a video doorbell, contact sensors on all exterior doors and accessible sliders, at least one interior motion sensor, a siren, a smart lock only on doors you actually need remote access to, and a hub that keeps working when the internet does not.
Smart locks: use them deliberately
A smart lock is not less secure than a deadbolt when it is chosen and configured well — but it changes your risk model. Prefer locks that retain a physical key override, choose models with a published security record, issue a unique code per person rather than a shared household code, disable auto-unlock based on phone proximity, and audit the code list quarterly. In short-term rental properties, rotate every guest code between stays without exception.
Network design: the part that actually protects you
This is the highest-leverage work in the entire guide, and it costs nothing but an evening.
- 1Change the router administrator password to a unique passphrase stored in a password manager. It is not the same thing as your Wi-Fi password, and on many South Florida ISP-supplied routers it is still the sticker default.
- 2Enable WPA3 if every device supports it, WPA2-AES otherwise. Never leave WPA/WPA2 mixed mode or open guest access on.
- 3Disable WPS, UPnP where you can tolerate it, and remote administration from the internet.
- 4Turn on automatic firmware updates for the router, then check manually every quarter that they are actually applying.
- 5Create a separate IoT or guest SSID and move every camera, plug, bulb, TV, thermostat and hub onto it. Keep phones, laptops, tablets, NAS and work machines on the primary network.
- 6Disable client isolation only where a device genuinely requires it, and disable the IoT network's access to your primary network in the router's firewall or guest-network settings.
- 7Open the router's connected-device list and identify every entry. Anything you cannot name gets blocked, then investigated.
- 8Rotate the Wi-Fi passphrase if it has ever been shared with a guest, contractor, tenant or installer. Hand out the guest SSID from then on.

Score one point per item you can honestly answer yes to. Under 30 means at least one practical path into your home or network is open right now.
Accounts (12 points)
- Every smart home account uses a unique passphrase stored in a password manager
- Two-factor authentication is enabled on every camera, lock, hub and alarm account
- Two-factor is app-based or passkey, not SMS, wherever the vendor supports it
- The primary account email is not the same address you post publicly or use for shopping
- Shared users are named individuals, not one shared household login
- Every shared user list has been reviewed in the last 90 days
- No installer, dealer or property-manager account remains that you did not personally approve
- Previous owners, tenants, guests and ex-partners have been removed from every device account
- Login alerts and new-device notifications are enabled
- The recovery email and phone number on each account are current and secured
- Account emails have been checked against known breaches
- Cloud video is set to the shortest retention you actually need, and end-to-end encryption is on where available
Network (10 points)
- Router admin password is unique and not the sticker default
- WPA3 or WPA2-AES is enforced, with no open or mixed-mode SSID
- WPS and internet-facing remote management are disabled
- Router firmware is current and auto-updates are enabled
- A separate IoT or guest network carries all smart devices
- The IoT network cannot reach the primary network
- The Wi-Fi passphrase has been rotated since the last time it was shared broadly
- Every device on the connected-device list is identified
- DNS filtering or the router's built-in threat protection is enabled
- The router itself is under five years old and still supported by its manufacturer
Devices (10 points)
- Every device is running current firmware, verified in the last 90 days
- No device in the home is past its manufacturer's end-of-support date
- Cameras cover all entry approaches, not just the front door
- No interior camera points at a space where a breach would be unacceptable — bedrooms, home offices with client data, safes
- Camera privacy zones mask neighbors' property and the public sidewalk
- Sensors are installed on all exterior doors and accessible sliders and windows
- The system has an audible siren, not just phone notifications
- Battery devices report low battery and someone actually acts on it
- The hub or base station has cellular or battery backup for outages
- Smart lock codes are unique per person and rotated after contractors, guests or tenants
Response and resilience (8 points)
- You know who receives the alert at 3 a.m., and it is not only one phone
- Professional monitoring is active, or you have consciously decided against it
- The system arms automatically on a schedule or geofence, so it is not left disarmed
- You have tested a full alarm event end to end in the last year
- Video is retained long enough to be useful to law enforcement
- The property has a plan for months-long vacancy: monitoring, a check-in contact, lighting schedules
- Devices survive a multi-day power or internet outage in hurricane season
- A written list exists of every device, account and code in the home
